What is a singing bowl or sound bowl?

A sound bowl – commonly known as a singing bowl – is an ancient sound instrument, made of a special metal alloy. Singing bowls come in different sizes, shapes and qualities and produce deep, vibrating sounds when struck or rubbed.

These vibrations can create a calming atmosphere, where the body and mind are able to slow down and relax. This makes singing bowls popular instruments for meditation, relaxation and therapeutic purposes.

Why choose a Peter Hess® Singing Bowl

Peter Hess® Singing Bowls are forged using traditional methods based on ancient knowledge. Each singing bowl undergoes a multi-stage quality assurance process before it receives the Peter Hess® Therapy seal of approval. A Peter Hess® Therapy Singing Bowl is made from high-quality copper and tin – not recycled scrap – to ensure exceptional purity and durability. Peter Hess® Zen Singing Bowls are made from a high-quality metal alloy. Unlike many mass-produced alternatives, every Peter Hess® Singing Bowl is crafted with care, precision and great expertise, resulting in a fine sound and long-lasting resonance.

This is what makes a Peter Hess® Therapy Singing Bowl:

  • Superior material: We use a special bronze alloy with a high proportion of tin – an expensive but crucial element for optimal sound quality. In cheaper singing bowls, the precious tin is often replaced by harmful materials such as lead.
  • Genuine craftsmanship: Each Peter Hess® Singing Bowl is forged, i.e. shaped, from a cast blank using traditional forging tools. Four to six experienced blacksmiths work on a sound bowl at the same time. This artisanal process requires 30% more labor and results in a longer, more consistent vibration.
  • Strict quality controls: Only a part of all bowls produced make it into the final product line. Inferior bowls are melted down and recycled. We make no compromises when it comes to quality.
  • Tuned to perfection: Each Peter Hess® Singing Bowl is fine-tuned to meet strict sound and vibration standards before it is certified as a Peter Hess® Singing Bowl. Our Peter Hess® Therapy Singing Bowls are available in two quality levels: Classic and Premium – with Premium representing the highest standard in terms of sound, vibration, and craftsmanship.
  • Ethical Production & Fair Trade: At Hess Sound we support ethical craftsmanship. All our singing bowls are produced under fair working conditions and without child labor. We maintain long-standing partnerships with our production facilities in Nepal and India and carry out additional quality controls at our factories in Germany.

Where and when to use a Peter Hess® Singing Bowl

Peter Hess® Singing Bowls are often used in self-care rituals, meditation, sound massages, sound therapy, yoga, and in educational settings. The Peter Hess® Singing Bowl Sets you’ll find in our online shop are especially designed for self-care and meditation with sound and will help you to find deep relaxation in the body. You will also find single therapeutic singing bowls which were specially developed for the sound massage.

Which size of singing bowl should I choose?

Singing bowls vary in size, and with that, in tone and vibrational effect. Smaller bowls – like the Peter Hess® Head Bowl or Tiny Bowl – have higher frequencies which are ideal for upper body work. Higher sounds are also often more connected to qualities like clarity or awarness. Larger bowls – such as the Peter Hess® Universal Singing Bowl – produce lower tones and are well-suited for grounding and working with the lower body.

How to use a singing bowl

Singing bowls can be played by gently striking them with a mallet or rubbing the rim with a friction mallet. The correct application is essential to experiencing the full sound spectrum of your singing bowl. The sound, vibration and effect depend on different things:

  • material of the singing bowl
  • size of the singing bowl
  • placement of the sound bowl
  • choice of the mallet

Where to place a singing bowl

In meditations or rituals the singing bowl is placed in front of you on a coaster or you can hold it in your flat hand. You can also place a singing bowl of therapeutic quality on different parts of your body and give yourself a sound massage. In professional sound therapy, different variants of therapy singing bowls are placed near or directly on the body to promote calmness and relaxation. Sound bowls are also widely used in yoga sessions and mindfulness practices to support presence and clarity.

How to strike or rub a singing bowl

To strike the bowl, hold it in the flat of your hand or place it on a singing bowl coaster. Try not to touch the bowl with your fingers, because it can then no longer resonate properly. When placing the singing bowl on your own body, make sure that your clothes or skin is only touching the flat bottom of the bowl so it can vibrate freely.

Choose a suitable mallet to gently strike the outer edge – ideally the upper fifth of the singing bowl. Alternatively, you can choose a friction mallet and play the bowl by gently rubbing it in a circle – this produces a long-lasting, singing sound.

Each singing bowl’s effect also depends on how and where it's struck. A gentle strike allows the singing bowl to unfold its full sound quality – with pure fundamental tones and rich overtones that resonate clearly and evenly. Harsh strikes can distort the sound, while soft vibrations create a calming, soothing effect.

When rubbing the singing bowl, go slowly and evenly around the rim with gentle pressure. Too much force can disrupt the sound. For best results, strike the bowl lightly before rubbing to help it resonate clearly.
